Cesária Évora (27 August 1941 – 17 December 2011) was a singer born in Mindelo, Cape Verde who earned the nickname the "barefoot diva" for performing without shoes. Affectionately referred to as Cize by her friends, Cesária Évora’s bright voice was noticed at a tender age. Her hope of a singing career however remained unsatisfied and it wasn’t until 1988 at the age of 47, when she was invited to Paris to make a record. This heralded the start of her African music legacy as the best world renowned practitioner of morna and coladeira, where backed by the Mindel band she captured the hearts of a loyal global fan base with hit songs such as “Mar Azul”.
