Tinariwen is a band of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern
Mali, involved in the
African music genres of assouf,
blues, Tamashek guitar and desert guitar. Associated with acts such as Terakaft and Lo’Jo, Tinariwen is a collective of singers, songwriters, and musicians, who come together in different combinations to play concerts and to record. Tinariwen was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib c. 1979 in refugee camps in Libya, but returned to Mali in the 1990's. Tinariwen’s popularity rose internationally with the release of the critically acclaimed
Aman Iman album which featured songs such as the hit
Matadjem Yinmixan
