Born Mwanaisha Abdalla Mohamed on January 3, 1981 in Mombasa, Kenya, Nyota Ndogo is a musician who performs taarab-influenced pop music. Nyota’s father Abdala Atib, a musician with a local Mombasa band, influenced her interest in African music at an early age. Her songs, mostly in Swahili with a few in English, are sung in taarab, as well as in the kapuka and genge genres. Nyota dropped out of school and worked as a house help until her talent caught the attention of a local producer.
