Ali Ibrahim “Farka” Touré (October 31, 1939 – March 7, 2006) was a blues and Malian folk singer, and one of Africa’s most internationally renowned musicians. Born in Tombouctou, Mali, Ali was the first African bluesman to achieve widespread popularity on the African continent. His brand of African music was characterized by a hypnotic blues style featuring guitars and rhythms, with singing done in several African languages, mainly Songhay, Fulfulde, Tamasheq or Bambara. In 1994, his hit song “Ai Du” was received with wide acclaim and established his reputation in the world music community.
