Born in 1952 in Mombasa,
Kenya, Ayub Ogada is an
afro-fusion artist musician world famous for his virtuoso nyatiti and djembe playing. After finishing school, Ogada co-founded the African Heritage Band, for which he played kit drums, bass and percussion, in creating a fusion of traditional
African music with rock and soul influences. Ogada then left for London where performed accompanied by his
nyatiti - a traditional lyre-like stringed instrument, leg rattles and ankle bells. In 1993, he recorded his first album, En Mana Kuoyo, which featured the song “
Kothbiro
”, that become a major hit with world music fans across the globe.
