Born on February 12, 1962 in Al Minya, Egypt, Hakim is a singer whose brand of African music features influences such as sha’abi, folk, belly dance and al jeel. As a child, Hakim’s interest in music was influenced by the great Sha'abi singer Ahmed Adaweyah with whom he began practicing Mawals, the vocal improvisations which begin a traditional sha'abi song. At 14 years old he formed a band and started performing at parties and school functions. Years later he moved to Cairo with the goal of making it as a professional singer.
