Brenda Fassie (3 November 1964 – 9 May 2004) was an
afropop singer born in Cape Town,
South Africa. With the help of her mother, a pianist, she started earning money at an early age by singing for tourists. At the age of 16, she left Cape Town for Soweto, Johannesburg to seek her fortune as a singer. Her career in
African music began when she joined the group Joy, and later became the lead singer for the group Brenda and the Big Dudes. Brenda Fassie enjoyed tremendous popularity both across the continent and beyond with hits such as
Nakupenda (I Love You)
, and left behind a solid legacy as the “Queen of African Pop”.
