Artist: Orchestra Super Mazembe

Orchestra Super Mazembe was a band based in Kenya that played lingala and benga music. The group had roots in Super Vox, a band formed by Mutonkole Longwa Didos in 1967 in DR Congo, with Lovy Longomba and Kassongo Wa Kanema on vocals. In 1974, the band moved to Nairobi and changed its name to Orchestra Super Mazembe. Regarded as one of the golden era lingala music acts, Super Mazembe released the classic “Kasongo” and popularized their own dance style, mushosho, which enabled them to dominate the East African music scene. Beset with problems, the group vanished from the African music scene in the mid 1980s. Attempts to revive the group ended in 1999 following the death of leading band member Longwa Didos.
