In the late 1960s, Congolese musicians went to Tanzania to escape the reign of Mobutu Sese Seko. There they found a decree by President Julius Nyerere that all bands must record and perform their live concerts only in Swahili. As a result, Orchestra Maquis Original came up with their massive hit Karubandika, which propelled the band to fame. The song revolves around a man who pretends to be prominent, with an important job, when he in fact is a shameless layabout who sponges on others in bars. Composed in 1985 by Kasalo Kyanga, and with Nguza Viking on solo guitar, Karubandika is today ranked amongst timeless Swahili melodies.
