Artist: Papa Wemba

Rumba musician Papa Wemba was born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba on June 14, 1949 in Sankuru Province, DR Congo. As a child, he became cantor of his parish and developed a very high voice which was to be one of the characteristics of his style of African music. From the late 60s, Papa Wemba played and sung with various groups and was one of the musicians to join the influential Soukous band, Zaiko Langa Langa when it was formed.
