Born in 1955, in Inongo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kanda Bongo Man is a soukous musician who began his
professional career in 1973 as the singer for Orchestra Belle Mambo. His
solo career kicked off only after he moved to Paris in 1979, and began to incorporate
elements of zouk music into his style of African music. Kanda’s new brand
of soukous gave birth to the kwassa kwassa dance rhythm, best
presented in his hit song “Sai”. Today, Kanda Bongo Man enjoys a legacy as
contributor to the revolution of soukous; by encouraging guitar solos, Kanda
introduced a new structural change that helped launch the solo careers of many
