Orlando Julius is a Nigerian musician who began his career in African music in the 60s. In 1964, he formed his band, The Modern Aces and was later backed by The Afro Sounders. His 1966 album, Super Afro Soul, established Orlando’s distinct brand of rhythmic afrobeat music. The album featured a “dramatic, highly melodic incorporation of "modern highlife," – highlife in a fast tempo, infused with rhythmic arrangements from American R&B, pop and soul music”. Much ahead of its time, Super Afro Soul is today regarded as being instrumental in helping to shape the American funk movement. With hits such as "James Brown Ride On", Orlando boasts a legacy of being crucial to the invention, development and popularization of afropop.
