Widely referred to as Franco Luambo or, simply, Franco, François Luambo Luanzo Makiadi (6 July 1938 - 12 October 1989) was a colossal figure in 20th century Congolese music and African music in general. Renowned for his mastery of African rumba, his seemingly effortlessly fluid guitar playing quickly earned him the nickname "Sorcerer of the Guitar". In 1985, backed by OK Jazz, the seminal group he founded, Franco released his greatest hit, Mario, about a gigolo who lives off of his older lover.
