Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba, popularly known
as Koffi Olomide, is a soukous musician who was born in Kisangani,
in the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 13, 1956. In the 1970s he
joined Papa Wemba's band, Viva la Musica, at first as a composer
and song-writer, and later as a vocalist and lead-singer. In 1986, Koffi launched
his solo career and formed his own band known as Quartier Latin, which produced hits such as "Ultimatum". He popularized
the slower style of soukous, which he dubbed Tcha Tcho and trained many
young musicians such as Fally Ipupa who has since left to build a successful
solo career. Today, Koffi enjoys a legacy as the undisputed king of romantic
rhumba, as well as one of the biggest African music stars.
