Pépé Kallé (November 30, 1951 – November 28, 1998) was a soukous musician with a multi-octave vocal range. Born Kabasele Yampanya in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the 6 feet 3 inches and 300 pound vocalist assumed the name of his mentor, Grand Kallé. His African music career kicked off with African Jazz band, then Lipua Lipua, before forming his own band Empire Bakuba. Empire Bakuba fused elements of fast paced soukous with rootsy rhythms from the interior, in the process creating a new dance - kwassa kwassa. His 1988 collaboration with
