Artist: Nyboma

Nyboma Mwan'dido was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and began his singing career with Orchestre Negro Succes. In 1969 he joined the band Baby National, then Bella Bella. He broke away and started a band called Lipua Lipua, which he later left to form Les Kamale. In 1979 Nyboma joined African All-Stars in Togo and thereafter worked with many African music greats from Congo including  Pépé Kallé, Koffi Olomide, Madilu Système, Kamale, Lokassa Ya Mbongo and Bopol. His 1988 collaboration with Pepe Kalle on the hit track Moyibi catapulted the duo to global fame, making Nyboma one of the most celebrated soukous musicians in the world. Written by Maroon Commandos' Habel Kifoto in 1977 in Taita language, Charonyi Ni Wasi literally means "life is hard". The song's message is in keeping with the tradition of the Sixties as it focuses on work immigrants new to the city, who were keen to remain connected to their rural homes. Charonyi Ni Wasi also demystifies the idea that the city is a place of endless good times, by revealing urban poverty and the high cost of living. This powerful arrangement features Kifoto's soaring vocals, accompanied by David Kibe on saxophone and Joshua Ogoma on trumpet. Its strong drum and percussion sequence and blaring trumpet are what make Charonyi Ni Wasi stick in your mind the very first time you hear it.

Mbalax or Mbalakh is the national popular dance music of Senegal and The Gambia. Mbalax is a fusion of popular Western music and dance such as jazz, soul, Latin and rock, blended with sabar, the traditional drumming and dance music of Senegal. In the late 1960s, Congolese musicians went to Tanzania to escape the reign of Mobutu Sese Seko. There they found a decree by President Julius Nyerere that all bands must record and perform their live concerts only in Swahili. As a result, Orchestra Maquis Original came up with their massive hit Karubandika, which propelled the band to fame. The song revolves around a man who pretends to be prominent, with an important job, when he in fact is a shameless layabout who sponges on others in bars. Composed in 1985 by Kasalo Kyanga, and with Nguza Viking on solo guitar, Karubandika is today ranked amongst timeless Swahili melodies.
